Back to School Safety Precautions from Paul Davis

August is the time to cross off any final items necessary before school starts. Whether you’re buying glue and scissors for your elementary student, prepping your teen for high school, or improving your own education, follow these few safety tips to help make this month a smooth dive back into the school year.

Slow in School Zone

Slow in School Zone

School Zones are for Kids

  • Be aware of school zones and go the speed limit.
  • Obey crossing guards.
  • Stop for school buses on both sides of the road and be cautious of children.
  • Look out for children, especially near schools and parks.
  • While in a school zone, do not pass other vehicles, change lanes, or make U-turns.
  • Never text and drive.
  • If you must use a cell phone, only use hands-free devices.
  • Never park in handicap spaces unless licensed.

Walking to School

  • Look both ways before you cross the street and only use designated crosswalks.
  • Obey traffic signs, signals, and markings.
  • Teach proper safety awareness and pick the safest route between the school and your home. Walk this route together with your children.
  • Instruct your children to:
  1. never accept a ride from someone else without your permission.
  2. walk to school with a sibling or friend.
  3. report any incidents to a teacher immediately.

Teen Driving

  • Teen driving statistics are astounding!
  • “50% of all teens will be involved in a car accident before their high school graduation.” – NSC.org
  • “Car accidents are the number one cause of death for U.S. teens – killing more than homicide, suicide and disease combined.” – NSC.org
  • Teach your teens the rules of driving. Use the resources below:
