Be Vacation Ready! Prep Your House with these Tips from Paul Davis!

Summer is officially here June 21, which means most of you will be packing up the swimmies, boogie boards and beach umbrellas to prepare for vacation. While you’re busy packing, remember to prepare your house for vacation too. There are several key security and property measures to take prior to leaving for your summer location.

Be Safe, Not Sorry:

  • Make your house look lived-in to avoid break-ins, such as stopping the newspaper or getting a friend to pick up your mail.
  • Lock all windows and doors and set the security system.
  • Turn on a lamp while turning off the remaining lights.
  • Alert your credit card company that you will be out of town.
  • Leave emergency contact info with a friend.

Prep Your Property for Vacation:

  • Unplug small appliances and electronics.
  • Turn off water valves to the sink and appliances, such as the dishwasher and washing machine.
  • Set the water heater to “vacation mode” so that it doesn’t run as much and saves energy.
  • Place the thermostat to 85 degrees, but no hotter to guard your furniture, plants and pets.
  • Run your kitchen sink disposal with vinegar or lemon to remove foul scents.
  • Discard any trash and dispose of perishable food.

We hope these simple suggestions will help you in feeling at ease about leaving your house and allow you to fully enjoy this year’s vacation.
